world day for safety and at work

recent report detailed that 135 employees were killed in work-related incidents in Great Britain in 2022/2023. Sectors where this was most common, included: construction, agriculture, and transportation and storage, and many of these accidents were related to falling from height, or being struck by a falling object or moving vehicle.

We’re passionate advocates for enhancing safety in the workplace – everybody deserves to go home at the end of their shift. And so in light of this years annual World Day of Safety & Health at Work – held on the 28th April, a day dedicated to raising awareness about improving workplace safety, and ensuring that employees remain healthy and well - we’re sharing our insights about how you can always prioritise health and safety.

There’s a very real risk of serious injury to both forklift operators and pedestrians whilst using forklift attachments – especially if employees aren’t adequately trained, the machinery isn’t being used as intended, or it’s no longer functioning as it should. Not to mention, the potential of costly damage and destruction to the equipment itself.

So, what can you do to uphold the highest health and safety standards?

forklift attachment risk assessment

Complete regular (and comprehensive) risk assessments

These should be carried out to ensure the suitability of any new forklift attachment for its intended purpose, updated as necessary, and communicated (and accessible) company-wide

Follow manufacturer operating instructions

All users need to read – and understand – how to appropriately use the attachment, and stay up-to-date with all or any changes

forklift attachment training

Participate in regular training

It’s paramount that all users have access to comprehensive and regular training, and have a well-rounded understanding about how the forklift operates, how to safely fit the attachment, and how performance can change once attachments are added

Ensure the attachment is correctly matched and fitted

Equipment should never be used for anything other than its intended purpose – ‘making do’ is not an option. Therefore, provided the attachment isn’t worn or broken, it should correctly fit the forklift allowing for safe usage

forklift attachment thorough examination

Complete regular Thorough Examinations

Legally, all forklift attachments must undergo a periodic Thorough Examination – ensuring compliance with industry regulations, and that attachments remain safe, fit-for-purpose, and efficient.

And, what attachments and tools can be introduced to the workplace to further improve health and safety?

Salt Spreaders, Snow Ploughs, and Yard Scrapers and Sweepers

Accessibility in and out of the workplace is essential, and should be upheld at all times. Having attachments on-hand which can keep pathways clear, free-from debris, and safe to walk upon – no matter the weather forecast – is a great asset to have

Forklift Tipping Skip or Drum Storage

These can help keep the workplace clean and tidy – either providing space to appropriately store items, or assist in clearing up waste

Forklift Safety Cage

Working at height is an essential part of a number of roles in a multitude of industries, but it can also be incredibly dangerous if appropriate provisions aren’t taken. Elevating employees while they complete the task, the safety cage also keeps them safe from harm.
